Honoring the legacy of Jon Hassell, Italian trumpeter and composer Lorenzo Cimino delivers a remarkable tribute through his latest release, “Hommage à Jon Hassell.” Recognized as a trailblazer in improvised music, Hassell imbued the trumpet with a profound psychological and sociological voice, transcending its traditional role. His music serves as a search for a mystical and ancient timbre, one that resonates with the human condition itself, surpassing the grandeur of any symphony.
Within the four captivating tracks of this album, sounds abound. Whether amidst a bustling market square, a crowded bus, an urban forest, or a vast desert, the trumpet remains a constant presence. Lorenzo Cimino, a distinguished graduate in trumpet and jazz composition, has left an indelible mark on the music world. His prolific career boasts numerous recordings for Rai, solo albums, and the coveted position of principal trumpet in the Fermo Festival Orchestra. Cimino’s concert engagements spanned across diverse venues, including the Noto Municipal Theater alongside Katia Ricciarelli and the Archi della Scala. Notably, he played a significant role in the creation of the albums “Amore Pirata” and “Il Manifesto” alongside Lester Bowie.
Cimino’s virtuosity as a soloist has graced prestigious festivals and events such as Anfiteatro Jazz in Lucca, Bologna Sogna, Serate Musicali in Milan, and the Romaeuropa Festival. He has also performed internationally in Germany, France, and Italy, captivating audiences with his extraordinary trumpet skills. Collaborating with renowned musicians like Lester Bowie, Javier Girotto, and Dado Moroni, Cimino’s performances are characterized by a fusion of talent and creative energy.
In 2016, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Dadaism, Cimino composed and performed the music for the acclaimed performance “WiTz,” the only Italian project awarded by the Dada 100 Foundation in Zurich. Continuing to push boundaries, Cimino released his debut album as a composer, “Mondo Volato,” in 2018.
