At first glance, one might think that Shawn Brown’s ‘Into the Furious Light’ has roots in Americana, however, this particular EP is a blend of multiple genres. Shawn goes on to prove that he is free from any labels as he remarks. His EP surely will make quite the impression with a total of three tracks that are included being impactful on their own. Or in other words, rather concise but powerful, impressive indeed. The first track of the EP, however, goes by the name of “Hold Fast”, which sets the stage perfectly with its energy and enthusiasm. The song is like the trailer of a movie begging to be played.

Brown has made a great departure from his usual style of music with this track including remnants of heavier indie rock into it. If you feel that the song has a powerful message of unwavering determination and outstanding resilience, you would not be wrong as the heavy instrumentation complements the message perfectly. Not only can Brown’s vocals be regarded as deeply personal, but they do share a concerning dark undertone which goes as an alleviating call for action. The third track of the EP “Let Them Love Ya” rings in quite differently and certainly sets the tone for Brown’s trademark raw soul vibe. The song has a great emotional balance that allows it to shine, unlike Other R&B tracks with how the lyrics focus on how important it is to be able to connect with someone and allow them to love you back. The warmth of the track is stunning to the listener showing true promise and innovation while also being able to uphold the emotional depth seamlessly.

“Sad Ones (Acoustic Version)”, a stripped version of Brown’s earlier single from this EP, wraps it up nicely. The emotion that is captured through the acoustic arrangement conveys the feeling better than the lyrics, which serve to be a reflection on pain and recovery. This, together with the other songs, serves as an appropriate introduction to the project, considering that it combines both strength and tenderness. Ms. Johnson goes on to say that Brown makes a huge artistic step with this EP as it’s a big artistic leap forward for the artist rather than a small step, and this is a testament to his versatility and artistry as each track is entirely different, yet the album works well together as a unit.
