‘Newborn Fossil’ by Marcus: the Apex Predator! marks the Detroit trio’s return with a forceful EP that demonstrates their ability to blend intelligence and emotion together with powerful guitar work while maintaining an authentic sound. The EP begins forcefully with “Newborn Fossil”. Tight riffs combine with powerful drumming while the vocal delivery screams like someone standing at the edge of a cliff. It sounds raw but not messy. You can feel every word. “Lo-Fi” emerges with a rougher groove that moves in a subtle, sneaky manner. The song unfolds at its own pace by gradually increasing tension which leads to a powerful release of energy. The band demonstrates masterful control of volume dynamics throughout this piece without coming across as overly self-promotional.

“The First Summer” transitions the atmosphere while introducing a blend of weighty nostalgia. The track creates an elusive memory that remains just out of reach. The guitar work stands out yet allows emotional vocals to remain the central focus while maintaining clarity and strength. “Plenty & Shine” contributes additional vibrant elements to the EP after this point. The verses develop slowly while the chorus bursts into sound but it’s the subtle details, such as a drum fill followed by a guitar squeal that truly bring the track to life. “No Fraction” delivers a perfect blend of melody and strength to close out the EP. The band gives everything they have during the final moments.

‘Newborn Fossil’ showcases Marcus: the Apex Predator! hasn’t lost a step. Their sound delivers greater sharpness and honesty now with improved precision. The entire album radiates authenticity because each song represents a compulsion to express something deeply personal. Jake Shives produced and Dave Feeny mastered this EP which achieves greater impact while preserving its authentic human feel. This brief yet impactful message shows both the band’s significance and the enduring relevance of Detroit rock music.
