Delta of Venus, a unique electro-rock band that was formed in a practice room in 1993, has made a phenomenal comeback with their brand new single, “Disengaged b/w Slipping”, after decades of laying dormant. Having not input any music for such an extended time, this release not only captures the same essence as their past distinguishable sound but also focuses on their newly found artistic capabilities. This is their first release since the reformation, and I must say it is quite the beautiful mashup between some shoegaze and indie pop.
In the new tracks, there are no verses or choruses. There are additional elements in the song that encapsulate you better, so instead, the music flows. Every aspect creates a combined atmosphere that is intricate yet still easy to listen to, without feeling overwhelming. The texture brought in by the guitars is also much heavier and slicker than usual, alongside the persuasive and rhythmic unity provided by the drums. The high production value at Dirt Floor Recording and Production takes this to a whole new level, allowing every single note to shine and sound crystal clear. No other single would be better than the one featuring the new band member Issy and her masterpiece vocals, which she happened to produce, purely by accident. Issy’s voice is heartfelt, which compliments the band’s sound beautifully. Ellery Twining discovered her during one of her shifts at Mystic Disc, where she worked for the better part of her life. Not only did she discover Issy, but she was also able to record her voice, which was unpolished yet Class A aside from raw, in only three short hours.
‘Disengaged’ sets a sorrowful mood which feels encompassing and yet introspective as the instrumentals of the songs juxtapose with the dismal melodies of the tracks. It also evokes feelings of ‘Slipping’ alongside which brings on an energetic vibe with its smooth guitar riffs. ‘Slipping’ showcases rhythm alterations which further enhance the serotonin in the track. All and all, the ending product turns out to be a musical assortment that captures the experimental nature of the band. All in all, Delta of Venus seems to have modernized their style and image while retaining the aesthetic of their roots as evident from “Disengaged b/w Slipping”. The distinct change that Delta of Venus has gone through brings an air of nostalgia to older fans while still captivating new ones.
