Stray Blue’s new acoustic EP ‘Wake Up & Smile’ is the gentle breeze that one needs on a suffocating day. Introspection, remembering their roots and what is most meaningful to them is what this EP is all about. It is a celebration of their 20 years of activity and is an opportunity to get reacquainted with the pure sound that made this alternative and indie rock band from Chania, Greece so loved and admired. The relaxed sound of acoustic instruments allows their true sound to be heard. Stray Blue consists of Nick Anastasakis (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), George Athanas (bass guitar) and George Papazoglou (drums) who have been together for many years. In the work presented, their connection as a group of three people is particularly prominent. The EP consists of only two songs. With the help of each other, Stray Blue manage to get their message across without “stuffing” the disc with additional songs.

“Wake Up & Smile (Acoustic Version)” is an intimate song. In the acoustic version, the electric air around the song disappears and a clean light is left. You can feel that the band members are sincere and open when they play the song. Nick’s guitar is tuned slightly differently than you would expect, and this makes it more personal and homely. Nick Anastasakis is guiding the audience and with a soft but firm voice he reminds us that life is not a bed of roses. He is not aggressive, instead he is reassuring. He is singing us to believe and when life seems to have no purpose, to find that purpose and be happy. Nick is not unrealistically cheerful. He knows what it’s like to get your heart broken and to know when to move on. He also wants us to learn from him and he does not need extra vocal effects for that. The music lets the lyrics of the song do their job without being aggressive.

“Moody Sky” is a collaboration with cellist Yoed Nir. In this song, Yoed’s cello does not just provide musical support for the vocal line. The cello has a voice of its own and sings along with Nick. It’s a sad yet peaceful piece. “Moody Sky” is a personal expression of reminiscence, emptiness, distance, and ultimately, letting go. The instrumental choices are well-thought-out and smartly done. Stray Blue do not overdo or force anything. In their way, they want to say things the way they are. In their new EP, after 20 years of service, they still haven’t lost their heart.
