Lazywall’s ‘Tighaline’ EP begins like a bolt of lightning. From the first second of the opening track “Madaher”, there’s a roar—it’s a rumble of thunder in the distance, swelling like gathering storm clouds. A build of guitars, distorted and chaotic, with the deep resonance of traditional instrumentation just on the periphery of your senses. The vocals are gritty with something that transcends any language barrier, reaching into you and taking hold in the way only a great song can. It’s a fury in your chest cavity, the percussion matching the beating of your heart and the turbulence of your own racing mind in an utterly consuming manner. Production is crisp and unforgiving in its execution, each element puncturing the soundscape in all the right places.

“Invincible” is a step along a different route, but no less intense. A furrowed brow, a steady pushing forward through unrelenting and inescapable circumstances. Lazywall are here to channel emotion, and in “Invincible”, their rock influences are no longer hidden but rather married to these North African percussion motifs in a way that is utterly enthralling. Guitar riffs that are nearly alive with breath and motion, vocals that are simultaneously grounded and full of urgency. Never does the song feel disconnected from the band’s true post-punk and hardcore roots. Traditional themes only help to add dimension without subtracting the sheer pocket-punch of the band at their most ferocious.

By the time “Reality” and “Loumni”, the EP’s last two tracks, come into play, there’s a sense that the record is at its bullseye. “Reality” wanders into a sense of vulnerability, with the weighted guitars giving way to a more pensive air, but with no shortage of honesty. “Loumni” is a brooding and simmering sense of urgency, wrapping the EP up in a tight bow. Rhythms dance, melodies that envelop you, Lazywall dance across the world of their own making with just enough rock heft and emotive weight to stay with you well after the journey has come to an end. ‘Tighaline’ is not simply an EP, but an invocation, a heartbeat and a battle cry.
