Genre-bending newcomer MERE RITZ releases her new song “Hump Day” on Wednesday July 2nd, which is, naturally, a hump day.
A Freudian alt-pop fever dream, the song explores violent impulses towards an ex with a playful and theatrical flair, where dreamy vocals clash ironically with the sentiment, until a distorted guitar slashes with the long-simmering emotion to the surface. The song serves as a resilience anthem, hoping to get over the “speed bump” of your ex and put them in “the rearview”.
Mere Ritz is a bold retro-futuristic concept making cosmic pop music to speak to our current moment: it’s Y2K nostalgia vibes with modern themes and futuristic grooves….
Mere’s first release was a subversive neon roller rink flavored look at the nepo baby phenomenon called “Fingertips,” which has drawn attention for its stunt marketing with its “dear nepo babies” letter-styled posters spotted around the Los Angeles area.
Her second single, “Rodeo Clown” a cosmic cowgirl tune which 1111Cr3w called “a rally cry wrapped in rhinestones, heartbreak, and horsepower… has already been featured in the prestigious Grimy Goods’ playlist of best new music for June alongside modern luminaries like Clairo, Lykke Li and Kehlani. Mike Mineo in Obscure Sound (whose coverage helped put Grimes on the map), said its “melodic, stylish electro-pop appeal stirs… further bolstering the magnetic synth tones and dynamic vocals.”
“Hump Day” builds on the motif of empowerment and resilience and provides the soundtrack to a summer for all of us looking to push forward and get over the hump!
