Polar Institute, a four-person band, has released a new EP called “Songs from Skriðuklaustur”. They mix jazz, classical, and folk music to create a unique sound. The band wrote the songs in a quiet area of eastern Iceland and recorded them in a famous studio near Reykjavík. This EP shows off their special style. The songs on the EP “Songs from Skriðuklaustur” were created in 2017 when the band stayed at the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute in Iceland. Over the next two years, they played and improved the songs at concerts in Britain and Iceland. In 2021, they toured Iceland and recorded the EP at Sundlaugin Studios, a well-known studio where the band Sigur Rós started. A skilled engineer, Birgir Jón Birgisson, conducted the recording.

Polar Institute’s music is a mix of jazz, classical, and folk, and it’s difficult to put into one category. The band likes to hear how others understand their music because people’s interpretations often differ from what the band meant to create. The band released their first album in 2018 and another called Cartography Vol. 1 in 2019. Over time, the instruments they use and the people in the band have changed, which has helped their music change and grow.
