‘Northeastern’ is the Old Tom and The Lookouts’ new album that adds to the realness of the beauty of struggling and enduring life amidst the unforgiving conditions of the Northeast area. It is an album with raw emotions that cover the realistic look of society fighting mental health issues, addiction, and love, while simultaneously being torn apart in a captivating world.
This sense of emotional weight is present throughout the album, with “Your Town” being the lyrics of every song. And having lyrics that beautifully clash with soulfully painful sounds. The constant need to escape somewhere, or even dislike being there, while at the same time not being able to due to love and attachment to the place, is exactly what the song is about. It’s almost cathartic, building up from a bare-bones acoustic beginning to an outburst of electric sound. On ‘Northeastern’, every song has its feel and story, yet the underside of pain and resilience ties them together. Every rough aspect of the band’s indie-Americana is beautifully complemented by calming and soothing elements. Adding to reality further was Joe Dunn’s production reigns which brought out the right emotions perfectly.
The first thing that strikes you is the honesty in the music. The honesty in this album is so acute that it is almost like going through someone’s diary. The mix of indie rock and Americana makes the album quite interesting; it is both contemporary and ageless at the same time. ‘Northeastern’ is more than just an album; it is a catalyst for discussion. It is meant for everyone who ever found the feeling of being trapped or misplaced or lonely. Old Tom and the Lookouts have done an incredible job, something truly inexplicable — music that works towards letting you know that you are not by yourself.
