Michellar’s first EP ‘My Alma Latina’ feels both like a bold introduction to the artist as well as a comfortable warm hug from a familiar friend. Written between San Francisco, Austin, and London, ‘My Alma Latina’ shows a passion in the collection of songs that Michellar recorded over in the Bay Area as well as the south and over in the UK. The new five-track EP was co-produced with Lloyd Miller and features five songs written, recorded, and produced with an undeniable intimacy and desire to celebrate her culture and identity as a Spanish and Filipino-American. Opening track “California Fields” is easy to listen to with its chilled and pensive vibe. “Ave Maria” is a reimagined version of the song, inspired by her realisation of how we all find common ground when we pray. It’s an emotive ballad and a memorable one at that. Not only does she sing about religion but also how we must come together, even when times are tough.
“If it’s Only for One Night” is a gentle and intimate track about love, “It’s only a kiss, but at least you’re in my arms”. “The Deep” goes for a moodier sound with a Latin-inspired funk, jazz, and bossa nova arrangement; one of the songs on the EP that weaves in the big influence of Santana that has inspired Michellar. “Samba with Me Tonight” finishes the EP on a fun, free, and uplifting note that you will find yourself bouncing along to once the song ends.
‘My Alma Latina’ is a perfect introduction to an artist that can skillfully mix her cultural influences and create an EP that is both familiar and fresh. A project that holds a variety of songs but feels like one heart-pumping body. Each song has its own character and music to enjoy. Yet, they all feel connected as if you are a listener to a trusted friend, who has known her for years. ‘My Alma Latina’ is an incredible beginning, and we can’t wait to see where Michellar takes us musically on her next release.
