Mad Painter’s latest single, “Debt Collector”, is a commendable style of modern blues-rock adorned with the eccentric touch the band is recognized for. This Boston-based group has always been famed for their 21st century sound and this should be a remarkable modern as well as classic to them in whatever century they find themselves in. It has everything from powerful guitar riffs to strong organ salvos with poetic lyrics, making “Debt Collector” a great example of 70’s rock.
The song starts with a picture-perfect homage to Deep Purple’s Jon Lord; his stylings made popular with a Marshall amplifier infused with a blanket of blues, however, while still boasting a cut through of rock. With vocalist Alex Gitlin piercing through the wind with his thunderous halos, these mixtures of sounds surely made it to create a firm debut that would stand the test of time. Together with drummer Alan Hendry and bassist Kenne Highland, they were able to establish a force that accentuated the harmonic timbre of the harmonious wind branched by Alex. The story is one that an average ear can understand; however, it comes with words that were cleverly stitched together by renowned magician of poetry Dmitry M Epstein in a way where it is entertaining and still paints a picture. There is also mild cheeky humor inspired by the spirit of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. It also pays off Wonderously as Gitlin’s performance is phenomenal and takes the lyrics of Epstein to another level in terms of craftsmanship, artistry, feeling,g, and zenith character for the time when the track was recorded.
The album is Tom Hamilton’s production which is sharp and modern but at the same time nostalgic. The core of 1970s rock is maintained, but it is made contemporary. Also, it was recorded in Peabody, Massachusetts, and it appears as if the environment breathed life and warmth into the song. Fans of Deep Purple or people who enjoy Nazareth or love classic rock, which is reset in time, should not miss listening to “Debt Collector”. Mad Painter shows once more why they are among the top bands at the moment, merging déjà vu and unordinary music spectacularly.
