The new Citizen Kane’s EP ‘Causing A Commotion’ drops just in time for late-summer driving: warm, nostalgic and full of emotions that can’t be contained. Reimagined classics and fresh dancefloor jams take on an intimate tone as Kane digs deep to confess on a project that bridges the season. The EP’s undeniable centrepiece is the single “Subconscious”, an exhilarating confession born from a chance encounter that blurs the lines between restraint and release. Across the rest of the EP, Kane flexes his genre-jumping versatility. “Meet Me On Street Corners (Synthphonica Radio Mix)” delivers a smooth, chill electronic groove, draped in nostalgic synth-texture that feels like a cinematic ode to the urban nightscape. “Hearts Aren’t Made Of Wood ’25” reimagines a classic from Kane’s own back catalogue with a modern sheen, its tender, bittersweet lyrics all the more vulnerable against deeper tones and gentle haze. And with “Ratbag Joy (Alternative Version)”, Kane is full of energy and glorious, reckless chaos. Looser, brighter and more colourful, it’s one of the most carefree Kane cuts in years — as sharp and gnarly as they come, but still more smoothed than scuffed. The tracks take to different lanes, but all have one groove in common: a mood as reflective as it is kinetic.
Bookended by the emotive heft of “Subconscious”, the EP is a towering release on its own and a no-fail appetiser for Kane’s forthcoming full-length ‘PSYCHEDELIKA’. The EP is an exercise in dichotomies, building a mood both reflective and kinetic as Kane flirts with heart versus mind, inhibition versus indulgence, nostalgia and futurism. ‘Causing A Commotion’ is a collection of cuts that sound like summer nights but still have a restless heart.
