With ‘Greaseball’ Italian composer Gianfranco Malorgio has turned a very difficult chapter in migration history into a musical project that is very much about memory, identity and the experience of displacement. It was released on 11th October 2026 and completes a trilogy which started with ‘WOP’ in 2023 and continued with ‘An Immigrant’s Story’ earlier in October 2026. Both ‘Greaseball’ and ‘WOP’ take their titles from the ethnic slurs that were routinely levelled at Italian immigrants and their descendants, slurs that were a very real part of the experience of migration. Rather than presenting migration as some kind of historical event, Malorgio is very much focused on the human story of it: the story of people leaving home under the weight of hardship, war and crisis, the story of the journey and the story of the uncertain future in a new land. ‘Every journey away from home is a story of survival, of sacrifice and of the search for belonging’ is the fundamental idea behind ‘Greaseball’ and it is a very powerful one. The piece was conceived with the potential for a film adaptation in mind.

The importance of the piece becomes even more apparent when you put it in the context of the sheer scale of Italian emigration. The accompanying notes to the release state that over 30 million Italians have emigrated since 1861, resulting in a global diaspora of some 60 to 80 million people of Italian origin. Behind those figures are generations of people and families with lives that go far beyond simply crossing a border. The progression of the trilogy (from ‘WOP’ through to ‘An Immigrant’s Story’ to ‘Greaseball’) forms a much wider artistic context for the subject of migration, of prejudice and of the experience of being an outsider. The title of the new single is intentionally awkward, it’s an uncomfortable title which confronts the very language that has been used to disparage Italian communities rather than one that avoids that history. Malorgio is also broadening the scope of the work beyond his own heritage to include the experiences of all migrants who have been compelled to leave their homeland. That is what gives ‘Greaseball’ its real power as a piece of work; it’s a piece of work which takes a very specific history of discrimination and places it in the context of the universal experience of being an outsider in a place that doesn’t want you.
Malorgio’s background in composition and screen music makes the cinematic intent of the project particularly potent. Having worked on a wide variety of musical projects, film scores and recording sessions over the years, he now produces through Papilio Records, the independent label he launched in 2024 with a specific remit of creating music that is appropriate for use in film, documentary and other visual media. “Greaseball” is his composition and synths with Moreno Viglione on guitar and taking on the roles of production, mixing and mastering. The collaboration is very much in keeping with Malorgio’s broader interest in music that can be used to tell a story outside of the confines of a traditional song. The details provided don’t really tell us anything about the actual arrangement, tempo or emotional arc of the piece, but the stated intention is very clear: it is a piece of music which is about the reality of migration. In the end “Greaseball” is a piece which asks you to look past the word which is so easily loaded with prejudice and to consider the lives, the journeys and the sacrifices of those who left their home in the hope of a better future. Its most potent statement is that we can take a painful piece of history and turn it into a means of remembering those who made that journey.
