Joshua Idehen’s cover of Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime” is an astonishing rendition that stays true to the spirit of the original but with his distinct creative touch. Featured in Idehen’s new EP, ‘Mum Does The Washing’, this track appears at the end as an expressive track that’s innovative and pensive at the same time. Idehen is a UK-born Nigerian who mixes pseudologue and music in his work; hence he approaches this famous song differently. The voice is supported by The Social Singing Choir which provides gospel backing. With a warm and soothing feel, this combines several aspects that can be described as reflective and celebratory. His lyrics, “Letting the days go by”, take on new meaning as inspiration strikes through Joshua’s memories from the much-welcomed transition to Sweden.

Ludvig Parment, the producer, managed to infuse a modern touch to the track without altering its raw feel. The track slowly intensifies in terms of instrumentals, creating an ambient atmosphere that allows Idehen’s powerful vocals, as well as the choir’s vocals, to come to the foreground. While the Talking Heads original was filled with bizarre avant-garde metaphors about existence, Joshua’s version focuses on helping the listener feel good about themselves. It’s about asserting the feelings of self-doubt and acceptance which is personal yet something others can share as well. As the EP revolves around themes of affection, hope, and togetherness, “Once In A Lifetime” is the perfect way to end this EP. The project emphasizes Idehen’s charm and musical skills by incorporating jazz, electronic, and gospel. The ability to recreate a classic while preserving the spirit of the piece is indeed a gift.

Indeed, Joshua Idehen’s performance at Moth Club will include this cover, amongst other stunning performances; the headline show sold out in a matter of hours, and even though it was set to be held on Dec 7, 2024, he still managed to leave his fans awe-inspired through meaningful storytelling and a magnetic presence. Don’t miss this one — this is as comprehensible as it is confounding – what a strange cover it is.
