Electronic musician Piers Baron is back with his fourth piece of music this year, and this one is timeless. ‘Beneath Our Regal Moon” is a beautifully composed orchestral instrumental. There’s no need for vocals here, because the music itself is incredibly stirring. Personal and intimate, yet epic and intense, the track is both quiet and powerful. Each note has a haunting emotional depth to it, like a shared secret under a moonlit sky. The melody itself rolls on, not pompously or melodramatically, but rather with a quiet, resolute sense of energy that is somehow gentle and insistent at the same time. There’s a peace to the music that quiets your mind without asking anything of you in return.

The piece was composed in Los Angeles, and recorded live in Stockholm with a 20-piece orchestra. It is both timeless and modern at once. Something about the strings is comforting and old-world, the instruments warm and rich, giving the song a romantic sensibility. But somehow it also feels completely modern, new, like it could not possibly have existed 20 or 50 or 100 years ago. Instead, Piers has revitalized classical sound with a modern sense of production, clean and clear, crisp and vivid, alive in all its notes and frequencies. The music swells and crashes like the sea, rolling over you. Beneath it all is that quiet sense of peace. This music is the kind that would work for contemplation or reading or even, for that matter, late-night existential brooding.

But while “Beneath Our Regal Moon” is a single, it is also a taste of the ‘Stringdaze’ album to come, and, if this song is anything to go by, it will be worth waiting for. Piers is well-established in music for film, with previous work on scores by Annie Leibovitz, and has an intuitive feel for making music that can express complex emotions. This track is no exception. Simple in its structure and form, but deep in emotion and feeling. If you’re looking for something instrumental and wordless, you might find this one sticking in your head.
