Trash Pal’s EP ‘Power Hug’ is the impressive debut from a group full of strong feelings translated through their music. With six tracks of heartwarming acoustic R&B that merge funk and rock, this record provides comfort to the listener no matter how violent life becomes. Conor Rayne and Gabe Schnider are the duo who are father to this EP which seems to have the capability of filling the deep void of love in people. The EP appears to begin with “Blossom” a track that appears to go left while the rest of the EP goes right, with more active instrumentation. It is not only a fantastically serene track to kickstart the EP but the strong lyrics further accompany the soothing nature of the track by reminding people about the importance of self-discovery. For all reasons, “Blossom” fits perfectly in its place and builds anticipation for a joyous journey, with Gabe’s guitar and Conor Rayne holding the track down with his confidence.

As the name suggests, “Garden” goes on to celebrate friendships and the vast array of emotions shared within them. The resonating endless connection between earth and friendships becomes the foundation of amazing playful vocals that further fuel a carefree vibe tied perfectly into golden imagery. All of this encapsulates the childhood feeling of love of being around friends. A song that tackles the journey of self-acceptance and exploring one’s flaws, this track is raw and for all the people. The only spectacular, improvisation free, guitar of “All This Time” both encapsulates the brutality of adolescence yet provides hope. The last main melody leaves those who truly struggle with a reason to carry on. This track is a gem and proves that massive amounts of growth come from pain. “Only You” takes a turn towards a more romantic note, combining a hazy vocal style with a catchy beat. It features some romantic elements which makes it a great song for late night hours. “The Spaceman” paints a picture of countless distractions and the incessant nature of contemporary life. The complex beat and sound effects closely relate to the theme and further fortify the tension and release feeling.

“Good Things”, a song to remember, closes the EP but urges listeners to remain hopeful. Because the message is beautiful and sincere, the song works well as the last one since it ends a very long and personal uplifting chronicle. Trash Pals produced the EP in their studio, ‘The Factory’ which is located in Venice Beach, and allowed for oddities to emerge so as to capture the essence of live performances. Great bands such as Wilco and James Blake are among their influences that helped shape their sound such as one that is both soothing and completely new. Power Hug is captivating irrespective of how one is positioned whether it’s for dancing, driving or thoughts, it is captivating.
