Noam Shapira’s ‘New Old Music’ is a multigenre work that merges pop, rock, classical, and jazz into a single deep album. It is magnificently integrated creativity. ‘New Old Music’ is a metaphorical depiction of Shapira’s life as a New Yorker where he used to be an Israeli musician. The album was released on December 27, 2024. The works’ authenticity has been empowered further by vivid compositions and Guy Moscovish providing longtime collaborative work as a pianist, Oren Hardy as a bassist, and Alon Benjamini on the drums. Shapira’s gentle grasp on art is further showcased by how the very first song on the album, “In the Beginning”, feels like an onset of hope and power.
Accompanied by a soft dip of piano melodies, it sets the rhythm for the whole album while cautiously gripping the listeners. “The Covid Hotel” sets a mark for jazz and soft rock with an unsettling blend that captures the emotion perfectly. The song showcases how the uncertainty that follows isolation stems from and captures the feeling exquisitely. With a name that translates to sunrise, “Kapikiri” serves as a vibrant piece that embodies celebration, but within life instead. The playful and romantic tempo of the song “Slick Fish” is so gentle, that it transports listeners to a peaceful, sunlit atmosphere – drawing from the elaborate piano work and tender percussion.
The artist encapsulates the audience with deeper thought with the track that is, “Producing.” It seems more delicate as he merges the layers of the band with the instruments which gives depth to the tracking. The elegant and free-spirited “Taltalit’s White Stripes” brings an end to this beautiful work. The band’s silhouette of the citizens is a bold yet brilliant way to end the album, as it leaves them speechless. Noam Shapira and his band set out to achieve collaboration and original feeling.
