Released on May 8, MayFall’s self-titled EP is a duo of dark and emotive alt-rock songs. With “Forevermore” and “What She Needs”, Niagara Falls-based MayFall brings the reality of addiction and the struggle to hold onto someone you love, when you feel like you might be losing them. These songs are companion pieces, written at the same time, and you can hear that through the tone and message of both. The tracks are raw with emotion, but they’re two sides of the same heavy-hearted situation. This EP isn’t just music, it’s a piece of chaos, of care, and of emotional scars.

“Forevermore” opens the EP with something heavy, but that heaviness is controlled. The guitars feel like that; they feel like the beat of a heart racing but still staying strong. Koetsier’s voice comes in like a cry, singing, “She needed me when she was falling down to the floor”. These lyrics feel like someone between helping and hurting, loving and destroying. The song builds, with sounds layered in purpose and exploding with a chorus that feels like you’re hanging on for dear life. There’s a sort of beauty in the weight of it.
Then there’s “What She Needs”, which comes slower and stripped-back, but no less powerful. The energy and sound changes, the tone softens, and suddenly we’re in the aftermath. This song looks at helplessness in the face of someone trying to recover, and asking if love can ever be enough to do that. “Do I have the strength to be?” is the question that rings out. The rawness of both the songs is something that stays with you long after the last note ends.
