Tivoli Boy – A Fairytale – Chapter One  Six Tracks at the Beginning of a Journey from Hell to Paradise

This recording, which was made in 1995, presents in A Fairytale – Chapter One the dark roots of Tivoli Boy’s musical world, a realm in which rebellious energy is combined with doubts concerning faith, humanity, and the possibility of a world that has been left behind by God. The EP includes six tracks—“Terminal 10”, “Welcome to Hell”, “Solution Is Near”, “The Sorcerer”, “We Are the Youth”, and “Darkbell – The Signal to God”—a sequence of vividly suggestive titles that implies a journey involving uncertainty, confrontation, and the pursuit of answers. “Terminal 10” comes first in the track listing and has a title that suggests either a point of arrival or a point of departure, whereas “Welcome to Hell” makes the project’s pessimistic outlook clear. This track also contains a notable aspect of the band’s history: a contribution from a former founding member is said to survive at the very end of the ballad, even though he had left the group during the early rehearsals after becoming a Christian. Hell on this first chapter is not merely a destination; it is the question out of which the whole story starts.

The sequence is followed by the tracks “Solution Is Near”, “The Sorcerer” and “We Are the Youth”, titles which open up different avenues into the EP’s main themes. “Solution Is Near” suggests the possibility of an answer, but the background information available does not resolve that answer at this early point in the story. “The Sorcerer” introduces a mysterious figure into the tracklist, thus strengthening the feeling that the world is influenced by forces which are hard to understand. As for “We Are the Youth”, the focus shifts to a collective identity, linking the songs with the rebellious spirit of the high-school band Mental Illness and their initial interest in the Norwegian black metal scene. The last track listed, “Darkbell – The Signal to God”, puts the spiritual question into sharp focus: after having gone through a period of darkness and apocalyptic reflection, is there still a signal to send—or an answer to receive? Although the individual lyrics and musical arrangements of these songs are not known, their titles fit well within the project’s ongoing discussion about faith, hell and the future of humanity. “From the promise of a solution to the search for a signal to God, these songs present darkness as both a destination and a mystery that is worth challenging.”

The wider importance of A Fairytale – Chapter One comes from the fact that the songs set out the starting point for a narrative which would develop over many decades. When the frontman of Tivoli Boy came across the Norwegian death-prog rock band Minas Tirith, his early aggressive style slowly changed and he began to reflect more intellectually, so that the concept of hell became a philosophical discussion on whether existence was heading towards destruction. That line of thinking carried on in Chapter Two – The Jerk Has Arrived (2002) and Chapter Three – The Meeting of Fit and Fat* before reaching a new major stage with Chapter Four – Superstar, which is scheduled for November 2026 on Teodor Music. The later chapter presents a remarkably different view: maybe life is not moving towards hell but rather towards paradise. In view of this final destination, the six tracks included in A Fairytale – Chapter One can be seen as the opening of a long debate, one based on rebellion, spiritual uncertainty and the search for meaning. “The true strength of this first chapter is in the place from which it starts and in the possibility that, after decades of questioning the darkness, the story might eventually lead to something brighter.”
