Magdi Aboul-Kheir’s Replicant Dreams is a vast retro-futuristic adventure which opens the way to an imagined world featuring spaceships, cyborgs, androids and neon-drenched horizons. Referred to as a spiritual follow-up to Yesterday’s Future, the nine-song album develops that previous concept into a more cinematic and emotionally rich experience, combining synthwave sounds with orchestral features. Beginning with the energetic drive of “Vector Drive” and the futuristic mood of “Orbital Beauty” and progressing to the more intense “Cyborg Legion”, Aboul-Kheir creates a universe in which melody stays at its heart. Although there is a great deal of nostalgia present, Replicant Dreams doesn’t remain stuck in the past; its retro influences are transformed into a modern electronic sound full of movement, colour and imagination.
The album gains even greater appeal as it shifts from one emotional atmosphere to another. The title song, “Replicant Dreams”, acts as the natural core of the record, combining its science-fiction imagery with a more human emotional tone, whereas “Leaving Earth” conveys a sense of departure and discovery through its cinematic style. “Stardust Drift” and “Stellar Metamorphosis” carry on the exploration of more atmospheric sounds, giving the album a chance to relax following its more energetic sections. “Deep Space Departure” then takes the listener even further into the unknown before “Lunar Meditation” brings the journey to a calmer and more reflective end. It is this transition from pulsating rhythms to atmospheric sections, from an epic scale to a romantic mood, that gives the album a narrative quality rather than merely presenting a series of retro-influenced tracks.
The central aspect of *Replicant Dreams* is Aboul-Kheir’s belief in melody and his openness to delving into various musical environments. The fact that he is a pianist and composer is evident in the way the album strikes a balance between electronic sound design and a more orchestral approach, and his broader body of work—ranging from ambient and electroacoustic pieces to romantic orchestral compositions and small piano works—accounts for the variety found on this album. What makes *Replicant Dreams* so enjoyable is that it takes its inspiration from 1980s science fiction seriously without at the same time losing its sense of fun; it is an album concerned with imagined futures, but also with emotion, wonder and the simple pleasure of following a wonderful melody to an unfamiliar place.
