Azuka Moweta’s latest album, Kenechukwu, is a vibrant, soul-stirring homage to the rhythms and culture of Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. With his Anioma Brothers Band of Africa, Moweta fuses Ekobe music with Igbo Highlife to create an album that pulses with gratitude, reverence, and danceable joy. From the first note, it’s clear this is music rooted deeply in heritage, yet boldly contemporary in its execution.

The album opens with Uwa Bu Onye Zusia (Zeal Onyia Tribute), a heartfelt homage to the legendary highlife trumpeter Zeal Onyia. Moweta doesn’t mimic the past; he channels it, passing the flame forward with warmth and sincerity. The title track, Kenechukwu, radiates praise and optimism, weaving Ekobe percussion with soaring electric guitar lines that lift the spirit and invite movement. Tracks like Ndi Di Mma and Izu Nwanne Ka celebrate community, brotherhood, and everyday heroes, while Odogwu Ahaba crowns the Delta warrior spirit—bold, proud, and unstoppable.
An instrumental highlight, Ogalanya Sound System, showcases the band’s technical and rhythmic mastery, spotlighting horns, percussion, and groove in a way that affirms the richness of African musical heritage. Closing with Nyem Nkem, Moweta seals the album’s message: live with gratitude, share generously, and celebrate life through music. Recorded at Ijele Studio in Onitsha, Nigeria, and mixed/mastered by Ijele Amichi, the album’s production is crisp yet warm, letting the band’s instrumentation shine while preserving the authenticity of Moweta’s Ekobe sound. Every musician—from trumpet and saxophone to the indigenous Ududu pot and Ogene—adds to the tapestry, creating an album that is both culturally significant and universally uplifting. Kenechukwu isn’t just music; it’s a joyful testament to culture, community, and the power of rhythm to connect people across space and time. This is highlife and Ekobe at its finest, celebrating life with heart, soul, and danceable authenticity.
