Codemachia’s ‘We Are the Glitch’ sounds like a fever dream of futurist symphonies and glitch-haunted narratives, an album of memory, technology, and revolution. The orchestral and choral grandeur, electronic distortion, and film score narrative work together to transcend music as mere sound. This is a truly immersive experience. “Awakening in the Ashes” emerges from the ether with a sense of mourning as well as hope as the birth of the unwilling protagonist is set out. “The Well of Tears” follows with quivering strings and a long melody that stretches like a creaking tree through a soundscape of gaseous synths and echoes. It’s a track filled with loss.
“The Wall of Lies” is an outburst of force and dissonance, heavy percussion beating against a heart that can no longer tolerate lies and manipulation. “Astou’s First Fall” is the gateway into the band’s abstract electronica side, and “Dance of Broken Circuits” arrives on a glitchy beat amidst clouds of industrial distortion that throb with robotic rebellion. “Poisoned Victory” brings a sense of triumph as well as danger, a moment of overcoming that still reeks of toxicity and leaves one hollow. “Shadow Weaver” creates a world of creeping suspense and disquieting textures, rhythms that hypnotize and inspire uncertainty.
“Khartoum Fever” is another standout on the album, a marriage of an otherworldly digitized African-inspired song with percussion that drives into the future like a scrap-metal runner. “Hathor’s Lullaby” dials back the chaos with an atmosphere of distorted menace, like an artificial breeze that winds across a boneyard. “The Convergence” swells up from the ground, an orchestration that soars upward and crescendos to a release. This is followed by the darker, denser “Gladius Æternus”. ‘We Are the Glitch’s’ final movement is a true anthem, an unforgettable hymn to error. Choirs and shattered percussion are the sound of raw pride in all of our flaws, of making imperfections our strength.
