Ed Daniels’ latest single “You Gotta Know” with Collaborations has been released with this chill yet upbeat sound that hints towards the golden sounds of the 60s & 70s, while at the same time remains rooted in the present day. Unmistakably reminiscent of the likes of Carole King, Carly Simon & America, this song is rich in sincerity and an appeal to listeners to take a stand, to question what they’re being told and to use their minds to find out for themselves. Its vocal performance, by Anais Preller, allows for a subtle strength to shine through, which carries the message of the song without being overpowering. Its mix is clean, crisp, polished and honest without being overproduced.

What is also so endearing about this song is the individuality of every player involved in the mix. Grammy winner Scott Spray provides a warm, felt-bassline throughout the song to support the groove while Tim Dehuff’s lead guitar work weaves throughout providing colour and movement. Tom Naggy’s drums provide a soulful pocket throughout while Kevin Monroe and Devotion’s back up vocals provide the hook with lush choral movement. Matt Oestreicher’s orchestration weaves in and around the rhythm section to provide a lush sense of chordal harmonies and support. This entire project was given a critical ear by producer Vic Steffens at Horizon Music Group in West Haven, CT to provide the listener with a blend of individual parts while still breathing life and intent throughout the whole.

The most significant element of “You Gotta Know” is its heart. Ed Daniels wanted to write a song that would start a discussion. He wanted to feel again that music still had something honest and real to offer and, with this song, his wishes are more than fulfilled. The artists under the banner of Collaborations are currently serving up that honest dose of real to the world while so much around us is awash with digital quick fixes, autotuned fluff and no time to breathe. “You Gotta Know” from Ed Daniels and Collaborations is more than a song; it is a moment.
