Crooked Cranes poured their unfiltered truth into their debut EP ‘This is Only a Test’ which debuted on May 9, 2025. This six-track EP was recorded in the basement and became the foundation for the band’s friendships and memories while remaining completely authentic. This project takes the band’s actual chaotic experiences and transforms them into an unmissable loud and emotional expression. These songs originated from late-night gatherings and spontaneous performances and they feature tales so unbelievable they must be true. The band from Fuquay Varina which includes Josh Faw, Dylan Hornaday, Andrew Bateman, and Josh’s younger brother on bass demonstrates clear influence from grungy legends such as Dinosaur Jr. and The White Stripes while developing their own distinct personal style.
The opening track “GF” begins with rough guitar sounds and a raw betrayal story that makes listeners laugh through the pain. The memorable riff combined with a relaxed delivery creates an unusual sense of connection. After that track comes “Mehico” which delivers a darker rhythm combined with an unexpected turn featuring an encounter with a cartel leader. The song “Dolfin” transitions from its energetic beginning to feature lyrics full of mystery while the music transforms into a dreamy haze. “Interstate” Song maintains its relaxed vibe while the guitars take center stage to create the atmosphere of endless driving with no particular end.
The sound levels spike once more during “Met A Gurl” which transforms heartbreak into an energetic garage rock anthem. The vocals deliver intense frustration that feels like screaming into nothingness after ending a relationship. “NeWay” ends the EP with a classic stoner rock style featuring a relaxed attitude toward smoking and enjoying great music. This project naturally comes to its conclusion without needing to make excessive efforts. ‘This Is Only a Test’ shows its rough edges intentionally because perfection isn’t the goal.
